Consultation to lower speed limit outside Inverness school

The Highland Council is seeking community feedback on a proposal to introduce a part time 20mph speed limit outside of Milton of Leys Primary School, as a part of the Council’s Safer Routes to Schools project.

Chair of the Economy and Infrastructure Committee, Cllr Ken Gowans said: “The Safer Routes to Schools project is an excellent and essential body of work which aims to improve child safety and save lives. The introduction of this traffic calming feature will help to reduce vehicle speeds at the school gate when children are making their way to and from school. I would encourage community members to engage with the Council in the process if they would like their feedback to be considered by the Road Safety Team during this period of consultation.”  

The Council is proposing to reduce the speed limit to 20mph on Milton of Leys Road on a stretch of road commencing before and including its junction with Macaskill Drive to a point before its junction with Redwood Avenue at the beginning and end of the school day. Additionally, the proposed order is seeking to introduce a 20mph speed limit on multiple roads in Balvonie Braes.

Chief Inspector Judy Hill said: “Police Scotland is committed to improving safety on the roads across the Highlands. We continue to work closely with the local authority on all matters of road safety and officers routinely carry out speed checks to enforce speed limits.

“We welcome any plans which aim to improve road safety on our roads and we will continue to carry out enforcement action when needed."
