The Commando Memorial Spean Bridge major overhaul complete
The Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge has received a major overhaul, works are now largely complete. The renovation and extension to the Memorial Garden coincide with the 70th anniversary of the unveiling of the statue as well as the 80th anniversary of the Royal Marines taking the Commando role.
The statue and plinth have been cleaned and repairs to the majority of the flagstone surround are now finished. The extension to the Memorial Garden has been completed, with tributes now protected from the weather by a low wall. The large stone centrepiece has come from the nearby Achnacarry Estate, where the first Commandos trained.
Working in partnership, The Highland Council, Commando Association, Royal Marines Association and the War Memorials Trust have funded these improvements to the memorial garden as well as commissioning a full clean of the Grade A Listed sculpture. Substantial donations from the public also made these works possible.
All partners would like to thank the public for their patience while access was restricted. Some further small works are still to be undertaken and a rededication service for the Memorial Garden will be held later in the year.
