Lochaber Suicide Prevention talks receive great community support

Mallaig Suicide Prevention Talks

Lochaber Cares Initiative launched Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 June 2022 across various locations. Representatives from the Highland Community Planning Partnership (HCPP) coordinated Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Awareness toolbox talks in Mallaig, Kinlochleven, Caol and Fort William.

Toolbox talks took place with various community led groups/organisations including representatives from Lochaber Voluntary Action Group (LVAG), Lochaber Chamber of Commerce and their associated local businesses, High Life Highland, NHS Highland, Lochaber Coastguard, Mallaig Fire & Rescue Crew, Mallaig Pool & Leisure, Road to the Isles Marketing Group, Lochaber Hope, Ewen’s Room, The Highland Council and many other members of the general public of whom some had lived experience of mental health, suicide and wellness journeys to share with others.

Jim McCreath, The Highland Council’s Mental Health and Suicide Prevention trainer said: “Death by suicide is a significant issue across Highland. The HCPP wanted to reach the heart of communities and deliver awareness, prevention and intervention talks to get people talking about suicide and mental health issues at a local level. The toolbox talks were well supported across Lochaber, and some great open and honest discussion and good practice came from the sessions. The HCPP plan to deliver more community led toolbox talks across Highland and encourage people to get involved and contribute to breaking down the stigma, shame and guilt associated with Suicide. Silence kills yet talking can save lives.”

Highland Community Planning Partnership has a dedicated Mental Health and Wellbeing Delivery Group (MHWDG) which is a thematic sub-group of the HCPP. Partners have worked together to create a signposting resource/website which provides information for individuals and communities.  The link to the resources can be found here (external link)

There is a ‘Prevent Suicide’ Highland app which allows users to complete a ‘Prevent Suicide’ safety plan and can be completed with the help of a trained listener or with a friend or family member.
