Cadets To Beat The Retreat In City Centre

The centre of Inverness will resound with the sound of pipes and drums next weekend when 100 army, air training and sea cadets Beat the Retreat in front of Inverness town house on Saturday 7 April.

The performance by the young cadets, who come from all over the UK, is a culmination of a week long pipes and drums training camp at Cameron Barracks in the city, the original home of the army’s school of piping.  During the week the musicians, all aged between 12 and 18, have received top class tuition from the military’s most experienced pipers and drummers.

The Provost of Inverness, who accompanied by the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Major General David McDowall MBE, will take the salute said: “It is very fitting that the cadets have kept with tradition and chose to hold their training camp in the home of army piping. Their performance on Saturday will be rousing so I would encourage as many people as possible to come along to hear the spectacular sound of pipes and drums being played en-mass. 

“This annual event has become something we look forward to and it is a major achievement for the cadet forces to see the number of young participants dramatically increase year after year.” 

The cadets will assemble in Eastgate and at 7pm they will proceed along the High Street to the front of the Town House.  After the Provost takes the salute the cadets will finish their performance by marching up Castle Street.  They will then join the Provost in the Town House for a Civic Reception. 

Drivers in the city should be aware that from 6.45pm-7.45pm the following temporary road closures will be in place.

• Bridge Street closed at its junction with Castle Road to its con-junction with the High Street
• High Street closed at its con-junction with Bridge Street to its con-junction with Castle Street.
• Castle Street closed at its con-junction with the High Street to its junction with View Place
• Castle Wynd closed from its junction with Bridge Street

Alternative routes for drivers will be clearly sign-posted.
