Council supports second Seachdain na Gàidhlig (World Gaelic Week)
The Highland Council will support the second Seachdain na Gàidhlig (World Gaelic Week), which aims to celebrate Scottish Gaelic across the globe.
This year’s theme of ‘Coming Together’ Seachdain na Gàidhlig will connect people to promote, use and learn Gaelic; through a coordinated network of activities taking place across Scotland and internationally, from 20 – 26 February 2023.
The initiative is funded and supported by Bord Na Gàidhlig and The Highland Council is promoting a programme of activities and events that will be delivered by the Council’s Gaelic Team in partnership with schools, community groups and other agencies.
Gaelic Committee Chair Cllr Calum Munro said: “The huge interest in Seachdain na Gàidhlig from Gaelic speakers across the world is a welcome boost to the language and I am delighted that February 2023 see this event run for a second year.
“Highland Council is contributing to the Seachdain na Gàidhlig programme through promotional, schools and adult activities aimed at encouraging Gaelic speakers and learners to use their language.”
Highland Council will be posting social media messages (proverb and place of the day) and sharing educational resources with Gaelic schools and parents throughout Seachdain na Gàidhlig.
Seachdain na Gàidhlig 2023 will be producing daily, online content across social media, ensuring that geography is no barrier to participation. This mixture of in-person and online events will provide a world class platform for Gaelic speakers to connect with both physical and virtual communities worldwide; encouraging individuals, businesses, and wider community groups to get involved. Additionally, Seachdain na Gàidhlig is encouraging people to connect online by sharing posts, images and videos using the hashtag #SeachdainNaGàidhlig.
Education is also being specifically targeted through Seachdain na Gàidhlig 2023. To help teachers and young people engage with the initiative, comprehensive education packs have been created for schools, in partnership with educational publishing house, Twinkl. The activities and resources include class planners, suggested content and activities aimed at both primary and secondary levels for both Gaelic and English medium schools – ensuring that all children and teachers can get involved, whether they are fluent or just starting their journey with the language.
