Highland winter road conditions report – Tuesday, 7 March 2023

The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time. It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.

Road condition reports for Tuesday, 7 March 2023 are as follows:

Sutherland – (as at 08:13)

Below zero road surface temperature (RST) with snow affecting all routes with up to 30cm on some higher routes. Treatment is ongoing. No known overnight issues. Driver caution advised on all routes.

Lochaber – (as at 07:54)

Zero temperatures. All Primary and Secondary routes being treated as per policy and due to forecast for snow and ice. No known problems on the road network or overnight issues.

Skye and Lochalsh (as at 08:38)

Heavy overnight snow with15cm cover across area. Below zero road temperatures across Skye and Raasay, with challenging road conditions across the network. Treatment ongoing on all routes as per route Policy. Abandoned Service coaches to be recovered this morning from A855 at Uig and Staffin. Driver caution advised on all routes.

Caithness (as at 08:13)

Hard packed snow on most routes this morning. Temperatures below freezing with wintery showers forecast throughout the day. Driver caution advised on all routes. No known overnight issues.

Easter Ross (as at 07:30)

Dusting of snow on most routes and temperatures below zero in most places. Treatment on going. No overnight issues reported. Driver caution advised on all routes.

Badenoch and Strathspey (as at 07:37)

Snowfall in the north area overnight, approx. 3-5 cm on all routes. All routes being treated with priority to Primary and Secondary routes. No known overnight issues. Drivers advised to take care when driving throughout the area.

Nairn (as at 07:39)

Snowfall on hill routes of around 5cm. Damp wet roads with snow patches on the bottom roads. All routes being treated with priority given to Primary and Secondary routes. No known overnight issues. Driver caution advised on all routes.

Inverness (as at 07:04)

Dusting of snow this morning on most roads. Treating all with priority given to Primary and Secondary routes. Driver caution advised on all routes. No known overnight issues.

Weather warnings

A Met Office yellow weather warning (external link) for snow and ice for Monday 6, Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 March, Thursday 9 March and Friday 10 March 2023.

On Tuesday 7 March, frequent snow showers will continue, causing further disruption in places.
