Appeal to the public as Corran Ferry service prepares for Easter holidays

Ahead of the Easter weekend, The Highland Council would like to remind residents and visitors to Lochaber that the Corran Ferry is currently operating a reduced service with the smaller vessel the Maid of Glencoul in service.

What does this mean for traffic travelling on the A82 and A86?

Traffic management arrangements are in place with temporary 30 mph speed limits on the A82 and A861 approach roads to the Corran Narrows.  Warning signage, information signage, and electronic VMS signs are in use throughout the route.  On approach to the Ferry, traffic management marshals will be managing queuing traffic in the marshalling areas. A temporary barrier system to control safe access to the marshalling area is in operation. These barriers will need to close when the holding area for ferry traffic is full, and drivers are asked not to stop on the A82 or A861 approach roads.

If the barriers to the Corran Ferry holding area are closed drivers are asked to use an alternative route or return later if necessary. Marshals will direct drivers to prevent stationary vehicles on the live carriageway.

Chair of the Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Ken Gowans said: “Until the MV Corran is back in service, we are operating on reduced capacity. As we expect the demand for the service to increase over the holiday period, we are appealing to residents and visitors to help support the ferry service and crew by considering if journeys are necessary, planning ahead to avoid peak times where possible and to use alternative routes.”

Councillor Kate Willis, Lochaber Area Chair said: “The reduced ferry service is having an impact on local residents, businesses and anyone visiting the area, so we are appealing for everyone to do what they can to help reduce the build-up of traffic as the busy Easter period approaches. The situation is under constant review, and the public will be updated as soon as a return date for MV Corran is determined.”

All updates on the ferry service will be promoted on the Corran Ferry twitter feed @CorranFerry and on the Council website.
