Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh in Skye lifted the Cup in 2022, can they make it 2 in a row or will someone beat them to it in 2023!?
We are very pleased that, this year, with new sponsorship from new Gaelic company Astar, district trophies will be presented to the winners for each district competition. This is in response to feedback from the young people in previous years and we know the young people will be delighted to lift a trophy enroute to the national final where they will battle it out for the national trophy!
Marina Murray, Development Director at CnaG, said: “We are delighted to be running the competition again this year! Cuach na Cloinne has built up a good reputation and is now firmly established in the school calendar, with the children all looking forward to playing in it. We are looking forward to a highly successful competition this year with over 500 young people taking part. It is a matter of great encouragement to see such high numbers participating. It is important that children going through Gaelic medium education are provided with opportunities to use their language outwith the classroom and also to meet with Gaelic-speaking children from other areas.
I want to record my gratitude to the sponsors of Cuach na Cloinne, without whose assistance the competition wouldn’t happen. They are Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, The Highland Council and Astar. I also want to send my best wishes to all teams as they fight it out for this year’s title.”
Chairman of Highland Council’s Gaelic Committee, Councillor Calum Munro said: “I am delighted that The Highland Council has been able to support Cuach na Cloinne for another year, and delighted to see the event returning with such strong interest from Gaelic Medium Primary schools across Scotland. I intend to attend the heats in Portree next week and I wish all the local teams every success. It’s so important to give these young Gaelic learners and speakers exciting opportunities like this.”
Dr Donald Weir, Gaelic Support Officer for Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CnES) said: "Comhairle nan Eilean Siar are once again delighted to support this successful competition this year. Cuach na Cloinne has been extremely successful over a number of years in terms of providing opportunities for our young people to use Gaelic in a natural, extracurricular context, whilst doing something that they really enjoy".
Iain MacMillan, Director of Development at Bòrd na Gàidhlig, said: “Cuach na Cloinne is such an important event. It’s great to see young people from across the country given the opportunity to come together and use Gaelic in a fun and natural environment.”
Murdo MacSween, Managing Director of Astar, said: “It’s so important to develop more settings like this where young people can interact, be active and even compete in Gaelic. Cuach na Cloinne is a fantastic initiative and a great example of fun and informal use of Gaelic outside of the school environment.”
Cuach na Cloinne 2023 is funded by Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and The Highland Council, with new sponsorship from Astar Media for prizes at the regional competitions, and organised by Comunn na Gàidhlig.
