New Book about Motor Neurone Disease Hits Highland Library Shelves
To mark Motor Neurone Disease Week (17th – 24th June) a new information book about Motor Neurone Disease is to be introduced to The Highland Council’s library collection today (Monday 20th June, at 2pm) at Grantown on Spey Library
Local man Kevin McMahon, who has Motor Neurone Disease, will hand over a copy of the book, “Motor Neurone Disease – at your fingertips guide” to Libraries Officer for Badenoch & Strathspey, Eleanor Somerville.
The Scottish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Scottish Libraries are collaborating this summer to offer the public this new book that can offer essential information about Motor Neurone Disease.
The book, “Motor Neurone Disease – at your fingertips guide” by experts Dr Stuart Neilson and Dr Frank Clifford Rose will be donated by the association to every library in Scotland thanks to generous discounts from Class Publishing and funding from the Lottery Grants programme, ‘Awards for All’.
There is great demand for information at diagnosis by family and friends. Motor neurone disease (MND) causes progressive paralysis and loss of speech. There is no known cause or cure. Unlike other conditions, little relevant health information exists in bookshops and libraries.
The association also offers its own unique Library and Information service for people affected by MND and their families, as well as the health & social care professionals supporting them. Their Information Officer/Librarian, Sandra Wilson said, “I think this book will be well accepted among the many families trying to find information on motor neurone disease”
Five hundred and fifty copies of the book have been donated to public libraries in Scotland, and 43 copies will appear on Highland Library shelves.
