Volunteers Needed To Prevent Residents Group Folding
A successful Invergordon group is in danger of folding because of a shortage of volunteers.
The Invergordon West Residents Association which covers Gordon Terrace, King George Street, Gordon Place, Seaforth Crescent, Queens Street, Bermuda Road, Castle Court, Birchwood and the Cromlet area, didn’t get enough volunteers at their recent Annual General Meeting to make up a full committee.
The group has achieved a lot in the area since its formation only three years ago such as getting extra dog fouling bins installed, an extra early bus service put on for hospital appointments and the promise of safety barriers to stop children running out onto the road. The group also successfully completed an environmental project installing a bench, planters and a cairn at the view point in King George Street.
The Association has also represented local residents at various meetings across Highland on issues such as Housing and the Community Warden Service.
Marie Corbett, a remaining committee member, said it would be such a pity if the group stopped now just as it was gaining momentum.
“We’ve had quite a few successes with the issues that we identified were important to the community. And there are a few issues like street lighting; dangerous fencing and traffic calming that are ongoing because they can’t be solved in the short term.”
“By having a group constantly highlighting our concerns to various agencies we can make a difference to our area – but we need volunteers to do this which we don’t have,” she said.
The remaining committee members are holding a public meeting on Monday 4th June at 7pm in the Invergordon Social Club to decide on the future of the group. If there are not enough volunteers to continue with a committee the group will official disband that night.
