New Civic Leader for Caithness

The new civic leader of Caithness is the youngest of the Council’s 80-strong membership. Councillor David Bremner, who represents Landward Caithness, is 26. He was chosen earlier this week by his fellow councillors in Caithness and is delighted with his new role. He is understood to be the youngest civic leader to represent any community in the Highlands. The post is honorary and carries no remuneration.

He said: “I am very proud to have been chosen as the civic leader of Caithness. It is a great honour and I will represent the area to the best of my abilities and ensure that Caithness is viewed in a wholly positive light. I firmly believe that Caithness has much to offer from the wide ranging skills of its people to its natural landscape that is beautifully unique within the entire British Isles."

Councillor Bremner is a mechanical fitter with the UKAEA at Dounreay. He and his wife Lauren have a son, Shane.

Council Convener Sandy Park welcomed Councillor Bremner’s election. He said: “I am very pleased that Caithness members have agreed to appoint a civic leader for the area. And David is an excellent choice. He is a very able and personable young man, who speaks with great enthusiasm and passion about Caithness.”

The two immediate past civic leaders of Caithness echoed the Convener’s support for Councillor Bremner’s election.

Councillor David Flear, Landward Caithness, said: “I am delighted that David is going to be the civic leader for Caithness. He is young and enthusiastic and cares greatly for the future wellbeing of the Caithness community. I have no doubts that he has the ambition and ability to carry out his new duties very well indeed. I wish him well.”

Councillor John Rosie, Thurso, added: “David is a breath of fresh air to local politics. He has an old head on young shoulders.  Since the elections in May, he has made a very big impression  with his contribution to debates and his energy and deserves this early recognition of his talents.”
