Met yellow weather warning wind and rain

The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time.  It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.

A Met Office Yellow warning for Wind and Rain is in place today, and from 6pm an Amber warning for Wind for western and northern Scotland. Information on weather warnings is available on the Met Office website (external link).

Storm Jocelyn - A spell of strong winds associated with Storm Jocelyn is expected to affect western and northern Scotland from Tuesday evening, leading to possible disruption to travel and utilities.

Highland Road Conditions Report for Tuesday 23 January 2024 are as follows:

Skye and Raasay

05:46 - Road temperatures dipped overnight. Mild this morning with no overnight issues to report.

Badenoch and Strathspey

07:00 - Frost patches with negative road surface temperatures across the road network. Temperatures rising throughout the morning. Primary and Secondary routes being treated across the network. No known overnight issues.

Nairn

06:59 - Frost patches across higher routes. Lower routes being monitored this morning. Primary and Secondary routes being treated across the network. No known overnight issues.

Sutherland

09:38 - Frost affecting some Primary routes with icy patches on the B9176 between Ardross and Aultnamain. Affected routes treated as necessary. Some Secondary routes were patrolled with action taken as necessary.

Lochaber

07:40 - Evening winter treatment complete on highest route due to low road surface temperatures (RST) forecast overnight (Mon 22 Jan). Wet and windy throughout, no further issues on the network.

Inverness

09:41 - Some icy patches this morning on high routes, gritting as needed. No further issues on the network.

Wester Ross

05:36 - Positive road temperatures, surface water, winds moderate.  No issues reported on the network.

Caithness

08:16 – Marginal low road surface temperatures on some primary and secondary routes, treated as a precaution. No other known issues to report.

Ross & Cromarty East

06:30 – Road surface temperatures marginally low this morning with positive air temperatures. Reports of sparkle and some icy patches. All primary and secondary routes being checked this morning.

At the time of issue, there are a number of schools or nurseries closed today as a result of Storm Isha. Our school closures is updated from 8am and cleared by 6pm each evening.
