Highland Youth Voice - All Equal @ Culturedale

Equality is the theme of a conference to be held by Highland Youth Voice, the elected youth parliament for the Highlands, this weekend (16-18 November) at Carbisdale Castle in Sutherland.  “All Equal @ Culturedale” has been designed in response to requests from Youth Voice members to be made more aware of other equality groups and different cultures in the Highlands.

Over the weekend, the young people will be speed dating with different equality groups including the Highland Senior Citizens Network, Calman Trust, Deaf Action, representatives from the Polish community and Highland Society for Blind People. This will be an opportunity for young people to learn about issues going on in other young people’s lives. They will have opportunities to learn sign language, Polish, Chinese ribbon dancing, Capoeira, break dancing, drama, origami, salsa dancing, and even have a go at Karaoke and bingo! All members will have training on speaking confidently and have an opportunity to work their way to receiving a Youth Achievement award!

There will also be more opportunities than ever before for debate among the members on issues they face in their local areas and that directly affect young people. And on Saturday night there will be a Cultural Ceilidh with the Tribal Misfits and The Scone Fairies!

Youth Voice, supported by the Highland Wellbeing Alliance which is a partnership of public and voluntary organisations, gives young people drawn from schools and local youth forums a chance to meet directly with decision makers who are delivering services to young people.

Gillian Slider, The Highland Youth Convener said: ‘This weekend will be a brilliant opportunity for the young people in Highland Youth Voice to raise their awareness of the issues that affect equality groups and learn about other cultures that are living and working in the Highlands today. It’s going to be a busy weekend but it will be great!’
