Council Ranger service recognised with tourism award

The Highland Council’s Countryside Ranger team received a commendation for outstanding services to the tourism industry in the Highlands at the Highland and Islands Tourism Awards held on Friday night at Inverness.

The citation stated: “The Highland Council Countryside Rangers could easily be regarded as the unsung heroes of tourism in the north. They provide a professional service and a range of high quality activities linked to the understanding and enjoyment of our world class landscapes, wildlife, culture and history.   The year round service they provide, under the auspices of Highland Council's Planning and Development Service, includes; guided walks amongst some of our most wild and wonderful landscapes, expert advice on wildlife and countryside matters, and a whole range of other activities and events focussing on our rich natural and cultural heritage.  Their local knowledge and enthusiasm not only enhances the experiences of our visitors and our local communities, it also helps us all to understand, appreciate and enjoy the countryside around us.”

The presentation was made, on behalf of the Board of the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards, by Andrew Thin, Chairman of Scottish Natural Heritage, to Mary Legg, Senior Countryside Ranger in Caithness and the longest serving Ranger in the Highland Council Area, and George Duff, the Council's Countryside Ranger Manager.

The Highland Council employs 25 Rangers who are supplemented by three seasonal and two student rangers during the summer. As well as offering guided walks and other events, the rangers work closely with schools and communities undertaking environmentally themed projects. They also deliver a key role in the management of long distance routes, local access and the Council's portfolio of countryside properties.

Councillor Drew Hendry, Chairman of the Council’s Planning Environment and Development Committee, said: “I am delighted that the Countryside Rangers have been recognised in this way.  It is a well deserved accolade for a dedicated team of countryside professionals."
