Over 80 people from across the Highlands gathered for the annual Celebration of Achievement Awards ceremony which recently took place on Thursday 15th November at the Thistle Hotel in Inverness.

Organised on behalf of the Community Learning Strategy and Development Partnership, and sponsored by The Highland Council and Communities Scotland the awards were presented by Rory Macleod, Community Learning Manager with Communities Scotland, Mr Macleod was very impressed by the award winners and encouraged them to continue their good work.

Now in its fourth year, individuals and groups at the Awards were recognised for their achievements in learning and community work which included art, creative writing, social enterprise, fundraising, ICT, and communication skills.

Award recipients were nominated by organisations, councillors and tutors who had worked with them over the past year and recognised their commitment and determination to succeed.

Councillor Bill Fernie, Chairman of The Highland Council’s Education, Culture and Sport Committee said: “This Celebration of Achievement is an excellent way to mark the attainment of people in the Highlands who might not have their successes formally recognised in any other way. The Council’s Administration recognises that it is very important for people to make the most of their lives by learning new skills to create a skilled and confident Highlands.”

Event organiser, Barry Northedge, Highland Council’s Principal Community Learning and Development Officer said: “The contribution tutors are making to their local community was also acknowledged. These often unsung heroes give generously of their time and expertise to help others.

“Many of the people who attended had travelled long distances to be at the event but all agreed that it was well worth the trip because the stories of achievement they heard were so inspirational.”
