Inverness Sea Cadets to benefit from funding awards

Applications from Inverness Sea Cadets have been awarded £50,000 from the Community Regeneration Fund and £20,000 Inverness Common Good Funding.

Leader of Inverness and Area Cllr Ian Brown said: “I am delighted that we have been able to approve these applications from Inverness Sea Cadets for property improvement works at their base in Merkinch which supports community resilience.”

The Community Regeneration Funding will be used for property works including roofing replacement, electrical upgrading, and kitchen improvements to enable the Sea Cadet Unit to continue providing activities for a range of young people, which will in turn support community wellbeing initiatives.

Community Regeneration Funding is an umbrella term for several funds that are available for communities/organisations to access in Highland.

It comprises elements of the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund along with the Highland Coastal Communities Fund and the Place Based Investment Programme, both of which are Scottish Government Funding streams to support economic regeneration and sustainable development in Highland.

Councillors previously agreed to ringfence any remaining balance within the 2023/24 Community Regeneration Funding allocation to deliver area priorities. Within Inverness the total funds available were £528,790.  At the February meeting of the City of Inverness Area Committee councillors awarded £475,773.55 funds and the remaining balance available was £53,016.45 prior to today’s £50,000 award to Inverness Sea Cadets.

Following a recommendation from the Inverness Common Good Fund Sub-Committee - Members of the Inverness Area Committee have also approved of a grant from the Inverness Common Fund of £20,000 towards building fabric improvements bringing the total combined funding awarded to the Inverness Sea Cadets today of £70,000.

The funding from Inverness Common Good will enable building fabric repairs to keep the building wind and watertight, as well as extend the life of the Sea Cadet Base at Kessock Road, Inverness.

Members’ discussions on the proposals can be viewed on the Council’s webcast.
