Timetable for the election of two Members of Parliament for Highland constituencies confirmed

The Highland Council has published the Notice of Election for the two Highland UK Parliamentary Constituencies which provides details of the timetable leading up to polling day on Thursday 4 July 2024.

The two constituencies are:

  • Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross
  • Inverness, Skye, West Ross-shire

Candidates wishing to stand have until 4pm on Friday 7 June 2024, to submit their nominations. Nomination packs are available to download from the Council’s website  

Candidates must not be disqualified from standing and must satisfy criteria on the day they are nominated and on polling day be:

  • at least 18 years old and  
  • a British citizen or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland or a qualifying  commonwealth citizen

There is no requirement in law for you to be a registered elector in the UK.

The deadline to register to vote is 12 midnight on Tuesday 18 June 2024. Anyone wishing to vote in the election at a polling station, using a postal vote or by applying for a proxy vote must ensure they are registered.

For the first time in a UK parliamentary election voters will need to bring photo ID when voting in person at a polling station. Voters who don’t have accepted photo ID, can apply for a free voter ID document, which is know as a Voter Authority Certificate Apply for photo ID to vote (called a ‘Voter Authority Certificate’) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) and the deadline is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024.

Alternatively, voters can apply online at www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote for a postal vote before the deadline of 5pm on Wednesday 19 June 2024 or arrange for someone to vote on their behalf by appointing a proxy online at www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote by 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024.
