Campbell Close Golspie named in memory of local stalwarts

The Highland Council welcomed family members of Hamish Campbell and Campbell Port to the handover of their new social housing scheme in Golspie – Campbell Close.  The scheme was named in memory of two prominent and very missed members of Golspie.

Sutherland Area Committee Chair, Cllr Richard Gale said: “It was a real pleasure to be there and to mark the opening of this new housing development and at the same time pay tribute to two sadly missed members of the Golspie Community. Both Hamish and Campbell made a significant contribution to village life, and it is good that we can honour their memory in this way.” 

Golspie born Hamish was a dedicated member of the community serving for 43 years as the local fish merchant, he was known for his welcoming smile and friendly manner.  Hamish was also an accomplished piper who loved playing music, he was part of the Caledonian Pipe Band for over 40 years. 

Campbell Port, a Quantity Surveyor with The Highland Council, was also a lover of music. Campbell and his family moved to Golspie in 1988 where he served on the Community Council, and many club committees including Sutherland Sports Council. Campbell was a keen sailor, part of the Golspie Rowing Club which he helped establish in 2014.

Both much loved and missed members of the community, The Highland Council are honoured to name the new housing scheme in their memory. 

The properties are the first Highland Council new build social housing properties in Golspie for 30 years and include a total of twenty new homes, 7 x 2 bed 4 person villas, 3 x 3 bed 4 person villas, 2 x 4 bed 7 person villas, 4 x 2 bed 3 person bungalows and 4 x 1 Bed 2 person cottage flats, offering a wide range of accessible properties to meet demand in the area.

Housing & Property Committee Chair, Cllr Glynis Campbell Sinclair said: “It is wonderful to see this much needed housing development in Golspie completed. The Council are committed to improving the availability of affordable housing across Highland and this project delivers a wide range of different sized properties to meet the needs of the community. It is a fitting tribute for the development to be named after stalwarts of the community and leave a lasting legacy of their commitment to the area.”

The houses were built by Capstone Construction Ltd, a Highland based company and part funded by the Scottish Government - £2,651,318.
