Go Ahead For Nairn Riverside Paths

Provost of Nairn Liz MacDonald announced at the area’s second Ward Forum that the applications for funding of Phases I and II of the riverside paths works have both been successful.  The Highland Council’s Planning and Development Service and Scottish Natural Heritage will be contributing a total of £36,022 and £19,998 respectively.

During the meeting the Provost paid tribute to John Orr , The Highland Council’s Inverness East & Nairn Countryside Ranger, and John Fraser,  Community Works Officer , for their part in pulling together the project with Scottish Natural Heritage.

The works will start on Thursday 1st November on the east side of the river stretching from Firhall Bridge to the cemetery, with Phase II on the west side starting on 1 December.  The work will be carried out by The Highland Council’s TEC Service in Nairn who will continue to be responsible for the maintenance of the path.

Included in the contract are rubbish bins, 18 new benches with bases, drainage and 1.5m wide paths with an aggregate surface over 2,280m of footpaths. 

The Highland Council’s Chairman of Planning and Development, Councillor Drew Hendry said: “The Planning and Development Service are very pleased to be funding this project to improve the lower riverside path along the Nairn. We are also grateful to Scottish Natural Heritage for their major contribution to the cost of this.”

Provost Liz MacDonald added:  “The path is a very popular walk for both locals and visitors to the area. This work, including new benches as well as a really good and wider path surface will allow everyone to enjoy one of Nairn’s most beautiful areas.”
