A’ Chomhairle a’ cur meal an naidheachd air buannaichean Deasbad 2024
(English version below)
Bhuannaich sgioba sgoilearan bho Àrd-Sgoil Phort Rìgh Deasbad Nàiseanta nan Àrd-sgoiltean ann am farpais lasanta ann an Dùn Èideann a-raoir.
Thog Alasdair Stiùbhart agus Eòghann Caimbeul cupa an Deasbaid ann an 25mh bliadhna na farpais aig Pàrlamaid na h-Alba, far an deach a chraoladh beò air BBC Radio Alba agus air-loidhne.
Thuirt Ceannard na Comhairle, an Comhairliche Raymond Bremner: “Abair farpais. Thug Àrd-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu dùbhlan làidir do na balaich, ach bha sgilean deasbaid air leth aca. Bha mi a’ dràibheadh fhad ’s a bha mi ag èisteachd ris an deasbad agus rinn mi lasgan mòr gàire nuair a rinn iad ceangal eadar AI agus astar an eadar-lìn san Eilean Sgitheanach!!
“B’ e dibhearsan sgoinneil a bh’ ann agus bha iad làn airidh air an duais. Bu mhath leam meal an naidheachd a chur orra agus is cinnteach gu bheil coimhearsnachd Ghàidhlig na Gàidhealtachd, agus gu h-àraid an sgoil ionadail aca air an eilean, uasal asta. Tha mi cinnteach gu bheil an teaghlaichean is an caraidean moiteil asta cuideachd.”
Thuirt Cathraiche Comataidh Gàidhlig na Comhairle, an Comhairliche Calum Rothach: “Tha an 25mh bliadhna dhen Deasbad Nàiseanta air a bhith sònraichte math agus bha farpais chrìochnachaidh na bliadhna sa aig ìre àrd mar as àbhaist. Bhiodh aon seach aon de na sgoiltean air a bhith airidh air an duais ann an deasbad a bha cho lasanta, ach tha mi air mo dhòigh glan gun do shoirbhich le sgoilearan Àrd-Sgoil Phort Rìgh aig a’ cheann thall.
“’S e fìor dheagh eisimpleir a tha seo de na h-ìrean àrda cànain is deasbaid a tha na sgoilearan a’ ruigsinn tro Fhoghlam tron Ghàidhlig. Tha mi a’ cur meal an naidheachd air a h-uile sgoilear a ghabh pàirt ach tha mi moiteil gu bheil an duais a’ tighinn chun na Gàidhealtachd agus gu Àrd-Sgoil Phort Rìgh uair eile."
Cuideachd a’ cur meal an naidheachd air sgioba Phort Rìgh, thuirt Cathraiche Comataidh an Fhoghlaim, an Comhairliche Iain MacFhionnlaigh: “Is math a rinn Alasdair agus Eòghann agus b’ e buil air leth a bha seo dhaibh.”
’S e prìomh amas Deasbad Nàiseanta nan Àrd-sgoiltean sgilean conaltraidh Gàidhlig nan sgoilearan a leasachadh is a bhrosnachadh agus ceanglaichean a thogail eadar sgoilearan air feadh na h-Alba.

At Deasbad Nàiseanta 2024
Council congratulates Highland winners of Deasbad 2024
A team of pupils from Portree High School won the National Gàidhlig Debate Competition – Deasbad Nàiseanta, in a hotly contested final held in Edinburgh last evening.
Alasdair Stewart and Eòghann Campbell lifted the Deasbad trophy in the 25th year of the competition at the Scottish Parliament where it was broadcast live on BBC Radio Alba and livestreamed.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Raymond Bremner said: “This is a terrific result. The boys were up against tough competition from Glasgow Gaelic School, but their debating skills were terrific. I was driving while listening to the whole debate and I laughed out loud when they related AI to the speed of the internet connection on the Isle of Skye!!
“It was great entertainment and a well-deserved win. I would like to offer my congratulations and let them know that they are a credit to the Highland Gaelic community and particularly a credit to their local school on the island. I’m sure that their friends and families are all very proud of them.”
Chair of the Council’s Gaelic Committee, Cllr Calum Munro added: “The 25th year of Deasbad Nàiseanta has been a classic one and this year’s final reached the high standard of all the most recent ones. Either of the schools would have been worthy winners in a hotly contested debate but I’m delighted that the pupils from Portree High School just edged it on the night.
“This is a great example of the high levels of language and debating ability pupils are reaching through Gaelic Medium Education. My sincere congratulations to all the participants but I’m delighted to see the prize coming to Highland and to Portree High School once again."
Also congratulating the team from Portree, Chair of the Education Committee, Cllr John Finlayson said: “Well done to Alasdair and Eòghann, a very good result for them.”
The main aim of the National Gàidhlig Debate Competition is to encourage the development of pupils’ communications skills through the medium of Gàidhlig and encouraging connections between pupils all over Scotland.
