Vikings return to Glen Moriston

Dalcataig woods near Invermoriston will come alive with the call of Vikings on Saturday 13th October, 2007.

Members of the public are invited to join a Viking Adventure, hosted by Invermoriston Heritage Group in conjunction with Forestry Commission Scotland’s Fort Augustus Office and Great Glen Way Rangers. The event is part of the Highland 2007 and Highland Archaeology Week programmes.

In conjunction with the Great Glen Way Rangers and Forestry Commission Scotland, the Invermoriston Heritage Group will host this family event that allows participants to take on an active role in the story as it unfolds around them.

Val Unglass of Invermoriston Heritage Group said: “This is a living history event that brings legends to life. Throughout the day it will be great to be guided through the forest by a Viking huntsman, or shield maiden, to meet St Merichead and listen to the voice of King Eric. It will really open people’s eyes and ears to the treasure trove of myths and legends that surround this part the Great Glen. The history of Glenmoriston will come alive as we walk a trail guided by a Viking hunter.”

Booking for the event is essential by contacting the ‘Viking Hotline’ on 07786 612168.

Participants can take up a woodland trail challenge, learn how to hunt for wild boar, meet characters from the past and hear legends come to life.  Once they have completed their travels into yesteryear they will have the chance to look around the displays in Invermoriston Millennium Hall.  There they will find information on local place names, gain information and advice on tracing their roots, have the chance to make beads and have a lunch courtesy of the Lite Bites team.  All proceeds from the event will go to the Heritage Group to aid with current and future projects.

Alastair Smyth of Forestry Commission Scotland said: “There is a full day of free family fun and activity, come along and enjoy it, but please book on Viking hotline 07786  612168 to make sure you don’t miss out.”

This event is part funded by Highland 2007.
