Council Welcomes Caithness Choice for 2010 Mod
The Highland Council has welcomed the decision by An Comunn Gaidhealach to hold the 2010 Royal National Mod in Caithness.
The announcement at this year’s event in Fort William follows a strong bid by Caithness for Gaeldom’s major festival.
Thurso will be the main centre for Mod 2010 but some events are also likely to take place in Wick, including the opening ceremony at the Assembly Rooms, the largest venue in the county.
Councillor Hamish Fraser, Chairman of the Council’s Gaelic Committee, and Councillor Bill Fernie, Chairman of Education Culture and Sport both welcomed the announcement.
Councillor Fraser said: “Caithness is to be congratulated on piecing together a strong bid. I am certain the Gaelic community will receive a very warm welcome and that the local community will benefit greatly from the influx of so many Gaelic enthusiasts.”
Councillor Fernie attended the Mod in Fort William to pick up some tips for 2010. He said: “This is a massive boost for the Far North. I have no doubts the people of Caithness will get behind this effort and make the 2010 Mod one to remember.
“There is a strong musical tradition in Caithness and our week-long musical festival is the biggest in the country.”
