Council Marks Energy Efficiency Week
The Highland Council is marking Energy Efficiency Week (22nd- 26th October) with events for staff and elected members aimed at raising awareness and maintaining the progress made in reducing energy use within Council properties.By signing Scotland’s Climate Change Declaration in January 2007 the Council is leading by example in helping to ensure greener, more efficient delivery of public services in the Highlands. Thanks to the adoption of an Energy Management Performance Plan, the Council is achieving significant reductions on its energy use with CO2 emissions decreasing by nearly 16% since 2004/05.
Work has included energy efficiency improvements and the installation of renewable energy into Council buildings. Behavioural change among staff has been supported through an awareness raising programme and the identification and training of 180 energy champions and responsible officers.
As part of the Council’s commitment to work with HITRANS, the strategic transport partnership for the Highlands and Islands, to prepare a green travel plan for the Highlands promoting greater use of public transport by 2008 the Council is also exploring how it can reduce its impact on global warming through reducing its carbon footprint from vehicle emissions. As a result the Council is currently on schedule to meet its target of reducing energy use by 15% by 2010.
