Battle-cry for community groups

The organisers of a historical event in Fort William are inviting local community groups, charities, voluntary organisations and traders to set up stalls to cater for a fifty strong field of battle re-enactment troops and spectators.

On Saturday 15th September, the historical entertainment company Battle Scar Entertainment will be staging a re-enactment of historic conflict in the Highlands from 12 noon to 4pm at the Old Inverlochy Castle.

Ian Deveney, Director of Battle Scar Entertainment said: “We have 50 troops enlisted so far for the “Fort William Spectacular” but hope to double that to 100 on the day. The story we will be presenting is…..the Jacobite army have been defeated at the battle of Culloden, they are now on the march south and looking for revenge, the garrison at Fort William is still occupied by the redcoat troops and the Jacobite want it back. Spectators will witness a battle like no other.”

Admission to the event is free, which has been supported by The Highland Council, HIE Lochaber, Community Economic Development (CED) grant, Historic Scotland and Highland 2007. Details about the event are listed in the Highland 2007 programme as part of the year long celebration of Highland culture.

Councillor Drew Hendry, Chairman of The Highland Council’s Planning, Environment and Development Committee said: “I am delighted that we are working with our partner agencies to support this Highland 2007 event by Battle Scar Entertainment which is an excellent example of cultural industry in the Highlands. This coordinated approach compliments the Council’s support for the current Fort William and Inverlochy Archaeological Project by bringing the past investigations of battlefield archaeology and the present together in a very visual demonstration. This event clearly contributes to the administrations key aim of helping to maintain and develop active interest in the heritage and history of the Highlands.”

Mairi Adam, development manager at HIE Lochaber, said: "Cultural heritage brings considerable economic impacts to the Highlands and Islands and we are pleased to be supporting this action-packed event. The 'Fort William Spectacular' promises a great day out for all the family, offering an historic and educational insight into the Jacobite risings that were part and parcel of 18th century Highland culture."

Fiona Hampton, director of Highland 2007, said: “Highland 2007 is delighted to support the event on 15 September which promises to be a fantastic day out for everyone, combining the spectacle of the battle re-enactment with atmosphere of the market stalls around – make sure you get involved and come along on the day!”
