Confirming Lochaber's Place as a Major Events Destination
The UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships taking place this week in Fort William will underline Lochaber's place as a major events destination and confirm its claim to be the Outdoor Capital of the UK.
This is the view of Councillor Allan Henderson, provost of Lochaber, who is hopeful that the prestigious event can be held in Lochaber on a regular basis.
The championships is the biggest sporting event to take place in the Highlands with an attendance of more than 40,000 expected to watch 700 competitors from 49 countries competing between today (Tuesday) and Sunday.
Councillor Henderson said: "After hosting the World Cup for the past five years, we are ready for the big one - the World Championships. I am sure our community will provide a warm Highland welcome to competitors and spectators alike. It would be marvellous if Lochaber could feature as a regular venue for the world championships, visiting once every four years or so."
Councillor Henderson is particularly pleased with the legacy of the world championships - a new cycle route from the town centre to Torlundy, which has been established by Transport Scotland.
