Demolition of 25-71 Joss Street, Invergordon
Work has begun this week on the demolition of a block of flats at 25-71 Joss Street, Invergordon by The Highland Council.
In June 2006, The Highland Council formally identified the area occupied by the flats as contaminated land following a series of investigations regarding the effects of contamination in the soils associated with the former use of the site as a gasworks..
Following investigations The Highland Council relocated residents in February 2007 and decided to demolish the flats. This was done to allow the contamination found in the soils around and under the buildings to be removed.
The Council’s TEC Services have written to neighbouring residents informing them of the progress of demolition and remediation works. The western block of flats (the block set back from the road, numbers 25-47 Joss Street) was demolished on Thursday 13th September. Following demolition, the building materials will be separated and then removed from site. The eastern block (numbers 49-71 Joss Street) is scheduled to be demolished on Friday 21st September. Noise, dust and vibrations arising from the work will be monitored, and preventative measures will be carried out to minimise their generation.
Neighbouring residents have been assured by the Council that appropriate Health and Safety methods are in place to protect the demolition/remediation workers and adjacent residents. The Highland Council apologises for any disruption in the area, and appreciates the continued cooperation of locals.
