Council warns motorists to slow down near Skye schools

Motorists are being warned that 20mph speed restrictions are being introduced at another three schools on the Isle of Skye for children’s safety.

The new speed limits come into force on Monday 21st April at Edinbane, MacDiarmid and Struan Primaries and will operate when pupils are expected to be arriving or departing from the school.

A permanent 20mph speed limit will come into operation on part of the Loop Road and Blackhill road near Edinbane Primary.

Part time 20mph speed restrictions which will be operational on school days are being introduced on the:

• Carbost – Peiness road at MacDiarmid Primary from 8:35am to 9:05am; 11:30am to 11:45am and 3:10pm to 3:30pm; and

• Sligachan – Bracadale road at Struan Primary from 9:05am to 9:30am and 3:15pm to 3:30pm.

Motorists are reminded that if they speed in the vicinity of Highland schools then the penalties will be tough. The Highland Council, Northern Constabulary and the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (Highlands and Islands Area) are clear that if motorists are caught speeding near Highland schools where a 20mph limit is in place, then robust enforcement action will be taken by both the Police and the Procurator Fiscal Service.

Councillor John Laing, Chairman of The Highland Council’s TEC Services Committee said: “The Council is committed to the road safety of our young people in the Highlands and I am delighted that when the speed limits at Edinbane, MacDiarmid and Struan Primaries become operational this will mean that three quarters of all schools on Skye will have 20mph speed limits in place.”
