Focus On Child Safety

An Inverness councillor has been thanked by pupils from his local school for helping make their route to and from school safer.

Councillor John Ford, Culloden, responded to the call from local parents to provide street lighting on a path which some children from Duncan Forbes Primary School take on their walk between home on the south side of Barn Church Road and school.

He dedicated his £4,500 annual discretionary budget towards the installation of five lighting columns between the entrance to Culloden House Hotel and the traffic lights on Barn Church Road. This was topped up by £1,500 from the Council’s lighting section of Transport Environmental and Community Services.

Councillor Ford met up with some of the pupils this week to be told that the lighting has made their walk to and from school much safer.

He said: "I was made aware of this safety initiative from the school and I am delighted that the children, their parents and other users of this popular path have found the lighting beneficial."

Roisin Dickson, Acting Head Teacher of the 260-pupil school, said: "The school community is delighted that Councillor Ford has responded to the need to provide lighting along this busy path. Anything that enhances the safety of our children must be welcomed."

The lighting section installed environmentally friendly lanterns to prevent spillage on to surrounding properties.
