Highland Celebration of Achievement in Learning

People from across the Highlands gathered for the annual Celebration of Achievement in Learning Awards ceremony which took place earlier this month (3rd Dec) at the Ironworks in Inverness.

Councillor Bill Fernie Chairman of The Highland Council’s Education, Culture and Sport Committee welcomed everyone to the event, which was sponsored by the Council.

This year individuals and groups were recognised for their achievements which included mastering computing, learning the English language, learning Gaelic, history research, and communication skills. All the recipients of the awards were nominated by the organisations, mentors and tutors who have worked with them and recognised their commitment and determination to succeed.

The contribution tutors and mentors are making to their local community was also acknowledged. These often unsung heroes give generously of their time and expertise to help others. They can have a hugely positive impact on the lives of the people they help, as the testimonies from their nominators showed.

Organised on behalf of the Community Learning Strategy and Development Partnership, and sponsored by The Highland Council, the awards were presented by three special guests. Scottish author Lin Anderson, awarded certificates and copies of her novels to people who had completed a Six Book Challenge. Other certificates were presented by Mark McCulloch from Ross County Football Club, and Don Cowie from Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC.
 
People had travelled long distances from all parts of the region to attend the event. All agreed that it was well worth the trip to hear the inspirational stories of those who received awards.
