Councillors Back Campaign to Retain Saltburn Post Office

The four Highland Councillors, who represent Cromarty Firth, are supporting a local campaign to retain Saltburn Post Office. Councillors Martin Rattray, Mike Finlayson, Carolyn Wilson and Maxine Smith are backing Saltburn & Westwood Community Council, who have voiced their extreme concern about the potential impact of the proposed closure of their post office, currently hosted in the local village shop.

The concerns raised include the impact this would have on the elderly people in the community and the affect on the community as a whole.

On behalf of the Cromarty Firth elected members, Councillor Rattray confirmed that the Council is extremely disappointed that the UK Government has set such a target for the number of closures across the UK and at the stance taken by the Post Office that if one is saved another elsewhere will be lost.

He  said: “We wholeheartedly support the Saltburn & Westwood Community Council. At a recent meeting of the Council’s Post Office Working Group, it was agreed that Saltburn would be the subject of detailed survey work which we hope will evidence the need to retain this post office.”

The Council is urging those communities affected to respond directly to consultation to Post Office Ltd.   People can also respond by either writing or emailing:

 Network Development Manager
 c/o National Consultation Team

 consultation@postoffice.co.uk

The Council has set up a discussion forum on its website and will forward the comments received to Post Office Ltd.  http://thc.highlandlife.net/post_office_consultation

In response to a call from the community, a request has been submitted to Post Office Ltd for a local public meeting. Once a date is confirmed, the meeting will be widely publicised locally.
