Local Youngsters’ View to the Future

Local youngsters have risen to the challenge of presenting their vision of the future of Drumnadrochit. A competition designed to illustrate Drumnadrochit Futures – being published shortly by The Highland Council to promote dialogue with local people on important planning issues - has drawn an excellent response from the pupils of Glen Urqhuart High School. The competition sponsors, visitlochness and Glen Urquhart Community Council, awarded 1st prize to Christine Graham (age 14), 2nd to John Stirling (14) and 3rd to Sarah Wilson (12). 

Councillor Drew Hendry, Chairman of The Highland Council’s Planning Environment and Development Services, said: “These young people are those who will shape the future, so I’m delighted by the enthusiasm shown and their response. I hope that their example will encourage others to think about the opportunities for the way we develop local areas.”

Councillor Mrs Margaret Davidson, Aird and Loch Ness, said: “The young peoples’ work is excellent, and their thinking is a measure of how their futures may be tied up with development of the village. Drumnadrochit Futures has been prepared to help the community consider all aspects of the village and its growth. The challenge is to look far enough ahead and plan for the next 20-30 years. Local views are needed to steer things in the right direction.”

The Drumnadrochit Futures newspaper is being posted to every local address. Views should be sent by Friday 25th August 2008 to the Highland Council. An Exhibition/Drop-in Day will be held at Glen Urquhart High School on Monday 9th June from 11.00 am-8.00 pm and a Public Meeting on Wednesday 11th June at 7.45 pm. Comments on a Draft Allanmore-Pitkerrald Development Brief, to be made available separately at public venues in the village, are also invited.
