Activities Over The Summer In Ross And Cromarty

This year’s Ross and Cromarty Summer Activities Programme is packed with a wide range of events for people of all ages to enjoy over the summer.

The programme starts on Saturday 2nd of July with ‘Bronze Age Pots for Tots’. Accompanied by an adult, crafty 3 and 4 year olds can join local archaeologist Hazel Anderson who will help them make a beaker pot using clay. The fun-packed session takes place at the Diamond Jubilee Hall, Evanton. It will also take place in Gairloch Community Centre, Fairburn Memorial Hall at Marybank and at Kilearnan Village Hall, Tore. Take your wee tot along for a fun-packed morning to produce their very own Bronze Age pot.

For the slightly older 5-7 year designers, learn about the Celts’ love of bright colours, mythical creatures and stunning spiral designs. Then, have a go at creating a mask using these Celtic symbols and designs to show off to family and friends. The session takes place the Diamond Jubilee Hall, Evanton and at the other venues mentioned above.

This summer, 8-12 year olds can join silk painter Heather Butlin in Dingwall Leisure Centre to create a colourful and eye-catching banner for display within the centre. Using the sea as inspiration, from dolphins and fish to birds and seaweed, Heather will be working with the group to produce a unique work of art. The weekly sessions provide plenty of time to make new friends and have fun!

Back by popular demand, ‘So You Want to Be a Star?’ begins in July in the Fortrose Community Venue for 8-12 year olds who are interested in being a performer. This fun packed week of drama, music, movement and making things is an excellent opportunity for the children to build on their talents. The 5 day course takes occurs daily, leading up to a performance for friends and family on the Friday night. The course will also run in Invergordon Arts Centre and the Macphail Centre in Ullapool, Come along to join in the fun and make some new friends at the same time.

Not wanting to forget the adults, a range of art activities are available for them to take part in during the summer weeks. The popular stained glass course weekend is back in Dingwall Community Centre for people who are 16 years and over. With the help of tutor Gail Steele learn the art of copper foiling and produce a small panel to take home. If you can’t make that venue, don’t worry, the course is also being run in the Munlochy Hall. For something different why not try the Beginners Basket Making Day in the Strathpeffer Community Centre or the Rag Rug Weekend in the Black Isle Leisure Centre, Fortrose. Book your place in advance to avoid disappointment!
