Drivers urged to slow down at five more Highland Schools

Five schools throughout the Highlands are having 20mph speed limits introduced.

In Caithness new part time speed limits at South Wick and Lybster Primaries are now in place and from Thursday 15th May, part time 20mph speed limits will be introduced at Grantown Grammar and Deshar Primary.

The new 20mph part time speed limits will apply on school days when pupils are arriving and departing from school.

At South Wick Primary the new signs will be in operation Monday to Fridays from
8:45 to 9:00am; 12.15 to 12.30pm; 12:45 to 12.55pm; 1.20 to 1.30pm; 3.10 to 3.30pm and 4.55 to 5.10pm

The operating times of the signs at Lybster Primary on Mondays to Fridays are from 9:00 to 9:10am; 12:45 to 1:00pm; 1:15 to 1:30pm; 3:10 to 3:20pm.

At Grantown Grammar schools the signs will operate on Mondays to Thursdays from 8:30 to 9:00am; 12:58 to 1:10pm; 1:40 to 2:00pm and 4:00 to 4:15pm; and on Fridays from 8:30 to 9:00am; and 1:15 to 1:30pm

At Deshar Primary the new signs will be in operation Monday to Fridays from 8:40 to 9:05am; 2:45 to 3:00pm and 3:15 to 3:30pm.

Motorists are reminded that if they speed in the vicinity of Highland schools then the penalties will be tough. The Highland Council, Northern Constabulary and the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (Highlands and Islands Area) are clear that if motorists are caught speeding near Highland schools where a 20mph limit is in place, then robust enforcement action will be taken by both the Police and the Procurator Fiscal Service.

Meanwhile Raigmore Primary School in Inverness has had a 20’s Plenty traffic calming scheme installed which also covers all roads in the City estate of Raigmore. Motorists driving in the Raigmore area should now adhere to the 20’s Plenty advisory speed limit which covers all roads including those at Raigmore Primary School.

Installed by The Highland Council’s TEC Services, the 20’s Plenty signs are green in design. The figure 20 also painted on roads throughout the estate is a reminder to drivers to cut their speed.
