Work to Start Soon on Ullapool Home Facelift

The Highland Council is to spend £1.18 million on the refurbishment of care home for older people at Lochbroom House, Ullapool. A contract has been awarded to Morrison Construction and work is expected to commence in the near future.  The eight residents at the home and staff will move to the Ullapool Hotel, during the refurbishment of the home, which is expected to take 10 months to complete.

The next care home in line for refurbishment is the 10-resident Telford Centre, Fort Augustus. Work is due to start in September.

The refurbishment of Lochbroom House is the latest in a series of major refurbishments of care homes for older people throughout the Highlands. These include Strathburn House, Gairloch, Pulteney House, Wick, Bayview House, Thurso, Melvich Community Care Unit, Seaforth House, Golspie, Dail Mhor, Strontian and the Mackintosh Centre, Mallaig.

Councillor Margaret Davidson, Chairman of the Housing and Social Work Centre, said: “We have now invested more than £3.5 million in our rural care homes.  This illustrates our commitment to providing the very best care in our residential homes for older people.”

Meanwhile, work is nearing completion at Caladh Sona, Melness, on fire safety recommendations and improving access between the two parts of the building. The cost of work is £175,000.

And a new children’s home for five young people will open at Docharty Brae, Dingwall in the summer.  The home, costing £924,000, will replace the existing facility at Coulpark, Alness.
