Addressing Climate Change Issues in Glenurquhart

The Highland Council is hosting a workshop to explore the implications of climate change for the Glenurquhart community. The workshop will take place at the Craigmonie Centre, Drumnadrochit, at 7pm, on Monday 10 November and is open to all members of the public. It is the first of many workshops scheduled to take place in the Highlands and aims to incorporate community issues and priorities into a Climate Change Strategy for the region. As a signatory of Scotland’s Climate Change Declaration, The Highland Council is committed to “encourage and work with others in our local community to take action to adapt to the impact of climate change”.

The workshop will focus on past weather events in Glenurquhart, exploring the causes, effects and the implications for local residents. It will form an introduction to a wider international community project called Clim-ATIC which the Glen Urquhart Land Use Partnership (GULUP) are progressing with the UHI Millennium Institute.  Clim-ATIC is an EU northern peripheries programme that  will combine scenario researching with practical climate change adaptation projects and compare adaptive approaches in Norway, Finland, Sweden, Greenland and Scotland.  In Glenurquhart, it aims to identify sustainable solutions to help reduce flood risk from the River Enrick and its tributaries and a comprehensive programme of work will commence in 2009.
