Alcohol awareness play tours Lochaber schools.
“A is for Alkie”, a play written by Ilona Munro, Lochaber’s Drama Worker with Eden Court Theatre, will be touring the area’s schools from Monday 17th November. The play takes the audience through the alphabet exploring issues around alcohol and its effects on individuals and the wider society.
Through the Lochaber Community Safety Team colleagues from Education, Culture and Sport and Northern Constabulary commissioned Ilona and Eden Court’s arts education Team to write and perform the play.
Lochaber Highland Councillor and local GP Dr Michael Foxley said: “Alcohol is part of the social fabric of the Highlands but our young people need to be warned about the consequences of excessive use. Alcohol is the major drug problem in the Highlands and Health professionals see the damage done by this every day in their work. It is therefore extremely important that our school children learn how easily an addictive behaviour pattern is established and the consequences of excessive alcohol use on the user, their families and society in the Highlands.”
Simon Jeffrey, Area Youth Development Officer, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Ilona and Eden Court will be performing this play on alcohol abuse. The performance focuses on the harm that misusing alcohol can do to young people, to other family members, to friends and to the wider community.”
Performances will be shown to P7’s, S1 and S2’s at the four Lochaber secondary schools on the week beginning Monday 17th November.
A special evening performance for interested parties, including parents will be on Wednesday 19th December 7:30 at Kinlochleven High School (new campus).
