Class size reduction implementation costs in Highland

Members of The Highland Council’s Education, Culture and Sport (ECS) Committee have reluctantly delayed implementation of the Scottish Government’s policy to introduce maximum class sizes of 18 in P1 - P3 as no funding is in place to meet the additional teaching staffing costs.

Hugh Fraser, Director of The Highland Council’s Education, Culture and Sport Service said:  “Due to the rural nature of the Highlands, there are already 100 of the authority’s 183 Primary Schools with classes at or below 18 in P1 – P3.

“However, the funding is not currently in place to implement in full  reduced class sizes. We will be looking to present the financial and practical implications of future class size reduction proposals back to the Education, Culture and Sport Committee.”
