Brora Environmental Improvements

The Highland Council’s Planning and Development Service are working with community representatives in Brora on developing improvements to the streetscape in the vicinity of Fountain Square and Gower Street.

The aim of the project is to enhance the quality of the local environment for the benefit of the local community and to encourage visitors to stop and spend more time in Brora.

A topographical survey of the streetscape will be carried out from Monday (13th October) and outline proposals will be worked up for a community consultation during November.

Highland Councillor for East Sutherland and Edderton, Deirdre Mackay said: “I welcome this initiative which gives us the opportunity to improve what currently is an eyesore in Brora. The Fountain Square area borders the A9 and is a feature visible to both local people and tourists travelling from the north and south. This area has been the hub of the village for many years and the fountain itself is a local feature.

“Local voluntary group ‘Brighter Brora’ work hard to make the most of this area but it is desperately in need of an overhaul. Myself and community representatives including Brighter Brora and Clyne Heritage met with Council Planning Officers over the summer to look at possible improvements.  Some of the initial suggestions in addition to the refurbishment of Fountain Square included a heritage trail and improvements to the bridge area.  I urge everyone with an interest in Brora to make their opinions known during the community consultation.”
