English language learners visit Highland Folk Museum
A group of adults who are learning English as a second or other language recently spent a day with their tutors at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore.
Members of an ESOL learners group from Kingussie, who are all working toward their SQA qualifications, were accompanied by Highland Council’s Adult Basic Education Coordinator, Mohamed Hamada and Rhona Hamilton, Highland Folk Museum's Assistant Curator (Learning and Access).
The introduction was part of the Adult Basic Education (ABE) initiative and an existing partnership with the Council’s Museum Services, to help learners integrate into the culture of the local community.
The group were encouraged to explore some of the rich Highland Heritage by means of activities which involved written and multiple choice questions, as well as enjoying a light lunch at the museum coffee shop.
Mohamed Hamada said: “It was an extremely successful and sunny day, enjoyed by all who attended. Further visits will be arranged as part of our ABE Autumn programme.”
Rhona Hamilton said: “The recent partnership between Highland Council’s Museums and Adult Basic Education has been of real benefit to us, bringing us new audiences and helping us to become relevant to this group. We hope that tutors and learners will continue to see the museums across Highland as inspiring and enjoyable resources for learning.”
