Inspiring applications to first round of Highland 2007 Legacy Programme

Following the recent closing date for the first round of the new Highland 2007 Legacy Programme, The Highland Council has announced that almost 200 applications were received, to a value in excess of £2.5 million.

Convener of The Highland Council, Councillor Sandy Park said: “From the applications received, it is great to see that the cultural sector in the Highlands is continuing its tradition of coming up with immensely creative ideas and projects across a wide range of events. However, with a total annual fund of  £500,000 available and applications valued in excess of £2.5 million, this presents us with an interesting but challenging decision making process and I am glad that the Members in each area will be providing local input and expertise in arriving at the final list of successful applicants from this first round of awards.”

Given the national significance of Homecoming Scotland 2009 and the opportunities that exist for the Highlands to participate in this Scotland-wide programme, the first round of the Highland 2007 Legacy Programme grants will be prioritised in support of events or projects contributing to this national celebration. Homecoming Scotland 2009 aims to motivate people of Scottish descent, as well as those who simply love Scotland, to come home in 2009 and the Highland Homecoming events will form part of a special programme to attract international tourists to the area next year.

The Highland 2007 Legacy Programme aims to enhance and to promote the events, festivals and cultural programme of the Highlands. It is available to community organisations, promoters, artists, performers, youth groups and schools, encouraging them to create their own legacy of Highland 2007. Decisions on grant awards will be made by the end of September. The closing date for applications to the next funding round is 6 February 2009.
