The Kirking of the Council

This year’s Kirking of the Council, which took place in Inverness on Sunday 7 September, was marked with colour and pageantry as the combined Pipe Bands of the Royal British Legion and Northern Constabulary led eight uniformed youth groups along High Street and down Church Street to the Old High Kirk – the oldest church in the City.

Pupils and Head Teachers from the City’s Secondary Schools, together with officials and Councillors in bright red robes joined the procession from the Town House to be greeted at the Old High Kirk by Reverend Peter Nimmo and Rt Rev Mark Strange, Bishop of Moray, Ross & Caithness.

The Reverend Nimmo, who was a key partner in planning for this year’s event, said, “I was delighted it generated such a sense of occasion. The participation of the uniformed youth groups brought something special to it.”

Provost Jimmy Gray said, “I thought the event was superb and the service went extremely well, showing clear links between the Council and the Kirk. I would say there is a long future for the Kirking ceremony.”

Both High Street and Church Street were lined with onlookers as the 140 strong procession made its way from the Town House to the Old High Kirk and on its return after the Kirking Service. Visitors to the City and locals alike were clearly enthralled and excited about this colourful event with an array of cameras busy taking shots, particularly of the Provost, Councillors and Clergy in ceremonial dress.

The Kirking of the Council is a significant annual event in the life of the City of Inverness, rooted in a tradition dating back some 400 years. During the service we seek God’s blessing on the work of elected Members and officials and on the life of our city. It is also an opportunity for the Council to recognise the contribution of the Christian community as well as the valuable contributions of all faith groups and voluntary organisations within the City of Inverness and give thanks for these.

Kirking day, the first Sunday of September, in each year is an important date in the calendar of events for the City of Inverness. It is an occasion that is highly valued by both Council and Kirk.

The next Kirking of the Council will be on Sunday 6th September in 2009.
