Young People To Share Knowledge With Senior Citizens
Nine members of Highland Youth Voice, the Highland’s youth parliament, have been invited to pass on top technology tips and provide practical demonstrations during this year’s Highland Senior Citizen’s Network Conference, which takes place on 14 April at the Lochardil Hotel in Inverness.
With technologies across the world changing at a rapid pace, the session aims to teach older people that it is not as difficult as they might think to make the most of new technology.
The Highland Youth Convener Catriona Burns will be joined by Magnus Monahan (Dornoch); Natasha Mackay (Strathy); Fraser Thomson (Cromarty); Lewis Munro, (Plockton); Robin Falconer (Wick); Siobhan McCulloch (Ullapool); Ickey Macdonald and Phi Macdonald (Inverness) to run the afternoon session of the conference.
The presentation will start with a short talk about the work of the Youth Parliament, highlighting the main issues affecting young people today and describing how technology is used to campaign for change. This will be followed by a fun quiz to find out how much delegates know or don’t know about modern technology. The young people will then use mobile phones, ipods and laptops to give on-line demonstrations on down-loading music, accessing websites and setting up e-mail as well as passing on helpful tips and advice on getting the most out of new ways of communicating.
Catriona Burns said: “This is a great chance for the older and younger members of our community to learn from each other. Often the same issues affect young people and senior citizens, and today will give us the opportunity to focus on what we have in common, rather than the differences. I hope the members of the Highland Senior Citizens Network will enjoy themselves as much as I know our Highland Youth Voice representatives will!”
