Closure of Nairn Swimming Pool For Temporary Repairs

The Highland Council has assessed the work necessary to re-open Nairn Swimming pool and is in the process of carrying out a temporary repair. The pool will re-open to the public during the week commencing 18 May.

The swimming pool closed last week when tiles fell off the pool hall and changing rooms. This prompted testing of other tiles and it was found that most of the tiles in the pool hall had become loose so the decision was taken, on the grounds of safety, to close the facility.  There were no members of the public or staff present when the tiles fell off the walls and the swimming pool itself has not been affected.

Council Convener Sandy Park said:  “Understandably, customers will be disappointed about the length of time the pool needs to be closed in order for the work to be done.  However staff will be providing alternative activities.  The outdoor Leisure Park which is normally only open at weekends will be open during the week until the pool reopens. They will also be putting on additional multi-sport activities after school which will give children, who would have been using the pool, a choice of alternative activities to participate in. This will not fully compensate for the facility being closed, but it will hopefully provide alternatives for some customers.”

The Council will be writing to High Life Members and those who participate in swimming lessons to provide them with the details of the alternative options. Because the closure began in April and is expected to run into May, High Life members will not be charged in May and June. Customers will still be able to use their high life cards as normal at other facilities such as Culloden, Inverness Leisure and Grantown and will be provided with the opening times of these facilities.

Douglas Wilby, Senior Community Learning & Leisure Officer said:  “We apologise to customers for the closure and I would like to reassure everyone that we are doing all that we can to get the pool reopened as soon as possible. This is our priority but we are also exploring a long-term solution.”
