Inverness West By-Election Looms
Voting will take place on Thursday (23 April) to elect a third councillor to serve the Inverness West Ward (No 14) on The Highland Council.
Six candidates are seeking election for the vacancy, created by the death of Jimmy MacDonald (Independent). The candidates are:
Polling will take place between 7 am and 10 pm at the Charleston Academy Community Complex, Muirtown Primary School and the Cathedral Boys’ School, Bishops Road.
The count will take place on the morning of Friday 24 April at the Town House, Inverness.
Those intending to vote are reminded that the single transferable vote system is being used. Instead of using a cross, they should number the candidates in the order of their choice, putting a number 1 in the box next to the name of the candidate who is their first choice, 2 in the box next to their second choice and so on. Voters can mark as many choices as they wish.
Voters are asked to put no other mark on the ballot paper as this could result in their vote not being counted.
Note to newsdesk: The electorate is 6,623. The turn out at the last council election in May 2007 for the Inverness West Ward was 51.74%.
The other two councillors serving Inverness West are Councillor Alex Graham, Liberal Democrat, and Councillor Pauline Munro, SNP.
The current representation of the 80-member Council is Independent, 29; Liberal Democrat, 21; SNP; 17 Labour, 7; and Independent Members Group, 5.
