Probationer Teachers Welcomed To The Highlands

Councillor Bill Fernie, Chairman of the Council’s Education, Culture and Sport Committee, and Hugh Fraser, The Highland Council’s Director of Education, Culture and Sport have welcomed 112 probationer teachers who will be working in Highland schools in the new session at their induction day in Inverness.

The new teachers will be starting work in schools across the Highlands today. Pupils return to school following their summer break tomorrow.

In total, 39 probationers have been allocated to secondary schools and 73 to primary schools. 

The number of probationer teachers in primary schools in each area are:10 in Caithness, 4 in Sutherland, 23 in Inverness, 11 in Ross and Cromarty, 7 in Nairn, 5 in Skye and Lochalsh, 10 in Lochaber, and 3 in Badenoch & Strathspey.

The number of probationer teachers in secondary schools in each area are: 2 in Caithness, 3 in Sutherland, 18 in Inverness, 2 in Ross and Cromarty, 3 in Nairn, 3 in Skye and Lochalsh, 4 in Lochaber, and 4 in Badenoch & Strathspey.
The 39 probationers in secondary schools will be working in the following subjects: Art & Design (1), Biology (2), Chemistry (1), Drama (2), English (5), French (3), Geography (1), History (3), Home Economics (2), Mathematics (8), Physical Education (6), Technological Education (5)

Three primary probationers and one secondary probationer will be teaching through Gaelic Medium.

Councillor Bill Fernie, Chairman of the Council’s Education, Culture and Sport Committee, said: “I am delighted to welcome our new probationary teachers to Highland. The probationer induction day is the first of a number of in-service training days throughout the year specifically allocated to probationer teacher induction and training.
