Inverness Hogmanay Street Party cancelled
The Hogmanay Party scheduled to take place at the Northern Meeting Park Arena, Inverness this evening has been cancelled following advice from Northern Constabulary.
The weather conditions in Inverness and the surrounding areas have deteriorated badly over the past couple of hours due to heavy snowfall and with more snow forecast organisers made the decision based on public safety advice from Police.
Councillor Roy Pedersen, chairman of the Inverness Winter Festival, said: “It is with huge regret that we have had to cancel this event. I know that so many people were looking forward to a terrific night.
“However, the police gave us very clear advice that it was unsafe to proceed given the forecast of even more snow and at the end of the day we had little choice but to cancel.
“It is a big disappointment but the public can be assured that we will not be put off by this setback and we already have plans to invite the same line up next Hogmanay.”
Area Commander for Inverness, Chief Inspector Andrew MacLean, said: "The underfoot conditions in Inverness are extremely hazardous and the roads in the city and in the outlying areas are treacherous.
"For reasons of public safety we made a recommendation to the organisers and they have decided to cancel the Hogmanay Party tonight."
