Blue Recycling Bin Collections Begin in Rural Lochaber

The recent introduction of blue recycling bin collections in rural parts of Lochaber is proving a great success with an average of more than 70% of residents putting out their bins during last week.

Encouragingly, contamination in the bins is low as most of the residents are following the advice provided in the booklet that came with their bins and are filling them with paper, cardboard, plastic drink bottles, tins and drink cans.

Councillor Brian Murphy, vice-chairman of the Council’s Transport Environment and Community Services Committee, said: “I would like to thank all of the Lochaber householders for using this new service with such enthusiasm and commitment. Already in the first fortnight more than 30 tons of material from Lochaber has been diverted from landfill and will instead be used to make products. This saves both resources and energy. Well done!”

Meanwhile the recycling rate at the Fort William Recycling Centre has risen to 73.6%, again showing the commitment of Lochaber residents to recycling.

Householders are reminded that the blue bins are collected once every four weeks. Glass is not accepted in the blue bins and should continue to be taken to the local recycling points. Tetrapacs (drink cartons) should also not be put in the blue bin.

All items in the bins should be loose with no plastic bags or any plastic items other than plastic bottles – without their caps. Full details of how to use the bins are given in the booklet that was delivered with the bins.
