Dingwall Library To Host Special Events Over The Summer

During the summer holidays Dingwall library will be hosting various special events and activities including a visit from a Canadian War Bride to talk about her experience and two events for all pre-school children organised by Dingwall Gaelic Nursery.

On Tuesday 14 July Ceitidh Hutton presents “Broc Ann An Cnoc” (Badger In The Hill), a story-time with singing, rhyme and puppets for pre-school children and their families.  Supported by The Highland Council and Bord na Gaidhlig, the session, which runs from 10.30-11.15am will feature a badger and other native animals living in our forests and will be a fun way for young children to learn some words of Gaelic, although no experience is required.

Thursday 16 July is the last day of the exhibition on fairies by Rag Tag n’ Textile. To mark the end of this popular and eye-catching exhibition, a special song and story session linked to faeries and the environment, suitable for children aged 5 and over, will take place in the library at 2.30pm.

Fairies will feature again on Tuesday 21 July when Christina Stewart presents the second event organised by the Dingwall Gaelic Playgroup - “Into The World Of Fairy Dreams” – a magical introduction to some easy traditional songs and lullabies with some Gaelic suitable for all young children and their families.

On Tuesday 28th July Canadian author Melynda Jarratt will be in the library at 7pm to give a talk about her work with war brides and, as part of the Highland Homecoming celebrations, will be bringing a real war bride from Canada with her who left the Highlands during the 1940’s after meeting a Canadian serviceman who became her husband.

The library will also be running the 2009 Summer Reading Scheme for all primary age school children.  This year young readers are challenged to finish 6 books with a questing or fantasy theme throughout the holidays.  If successful, they will be presented with medals, certificates and gifts at the start of the new term.

All of these events are free and there is no need to pre-book places.

Finally, as part of The Highland Council’s Summer Events programme the library will be hosting special cartoon workshops where children will be able to learn the art of Manga drawing, create their own super heroes and design their own stories.  The workshops will take place on 21 and 29 July and the 6 August.  The sessions for 8-11 year olds will run from 11am to 12.30 and 12-17 year olds will have their turn from 2pm – 3.30pm.  Places are free but they need to be booked in advance by telephoning 01349 869869.
