Highland Members of The Scottish Youth Parliament

Five young people from the Highlands have been elected as members of the Scottish Youth Parliament and will take their seats in Edinburgh when the youth Parliament meets on 13 and 14 June.

Amy Riley and Rowena Carlton both from Nairn Academy have been elected to represent Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber.  Siobhan McCulloch from Ullapool High School and Rory Forbes from Dingwall Academy will represent Ross, Skye and Inverness West. Esther Richards from Kinlochbervie High School will represent Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross with assistance from Fortrose Academy pupil Paige Shepherd until another local representative is confirmed.

During the election campaign all candidates produced a manifesto and information about them was published on the Young Scot website.  Voters aged between 12 and 25 were able to cast their votes on-line for their preferred candidate.

The Convener of the Highland Council, Sandy Park said:  “I would like to congratulate all the new MSYPs who obviously feel very passionate about issues concerning young people in their area.  I am sure being involved in the Scottish Youth Parliament will be a great experience and give them a real insight into how decisions are made.  They have a real opportunity to make a difference as their opinions and ideas will be listened to so I wish them a ll a very successful term of office.”

Before attending the meeting in Edinburgh the newly elected Highland MSYPs will be speaking to young people in their area about local issues affecting them.
