Ranger Walk Forays Into Fungi

The private life of fungi will be explored on a Highland Council Ranger guided walk this weekend (Saturday 15th October, 2005).

Are fungi plants or animals, mushrooms or toadstools? How do fairy rings form? Why do some fungi live in trees and others on the ground? What do the different colours of fungi mean? These and many more questions can be answered by Highland Council’s Rangers as they explain the important role that fungi play in local woodlands.

Katy Martin, Senior Inverness and Nairn Ranger says: "Right now is one of the best times of the year to see various forms of fungi in all their glory. This is not a spy and identify guided walk but a celebration of the wonderful world of fungi. We've got some large models of fungi that will us to explain the mysteries of this species."

This free family event walk will last for approximately 2 hours. Meet at the entrance to Foyers Falls opposite the Foyers shop, Foyers at 2pm on Saturday 15th October. Dress for the weather.

Countryside Rangers in The Highland Council’s Planning and Development Service are grant aided by Scottish Natural Heritage. The role of Countryside Rangers is to promote public enjoyment and appreciation of the countryside and to conserve wildlife and habitats. There are 27 Ranger throughout the Highlands.
